Below is a description of the events contested at UIL Academic meets as well as the coach for each event.
Accounting- Mr. Chad Nash
Accounting is the language of business, and requires basic reading and math skills. This competition is formula- and memorization-intensive.
Calculator- Mr. Chance Nash
This competition involves keying a variety of equations in and finding answers. Shortcuts are key!
Computer Applications- (Undecided)
This competition involves using Microsoft Word and Excel to create a final product.
Computer Science- Ms. Hanks
This competition concerns the application of programming concepts and skills and would be highly useful to anyone interested in coding or a future with computers.
Current Issues- Coach Acosta
The current issues competition focuses on what is going on in the world around you. Current state, national, and world news and events are covered on the test.
Extemporaneous Speaking- Ms. Allen
There are two divisions of Extemporaneous Speaking (Informative and Persuasive), which require students to speak about a variety of topics. The focus of this event is public speaking skills.
Journalism- Ms. Curry
Journalism covers a variety of (largely writing) events, including Copy Editing (proofreading), Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, Headline Writing, and News Writing. If you are a writer, there is an event here for you.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate- Ms. Childerss
LD Debate is an event that requires preparation and study, after which students debate over a pre-arranged topic.
Literary Criticism- John Cook
This event involves a number of different elements, including reading a selection of a specific author, a book, and a play, and answering questions over a variety of topics.
Mathematics- Mr. Chance Nash
This competition is a multiple choice test over higher-level math concepts, ranging from Algebra up to Calculus.
Number Sense- Mr. Chad Nash
This competition focuses on mental math- do all of the work in your head, with no calculator and no scratch work.
One Act Play- Mrs. Childerss & Ms. Childerss
The UIL One-Act Play contest is a competition where similarly sized Texas schools present an 18-40 minute play and may be adjudicated by a panel of three judges or a single judge.
Poetry and Prose Interpretation- Ms. Curry
For this event, think acting, but there is only one character. Contestants are asked to read a selection expressively.
Ready Writing- Ms. Cordova
This event is a lengthier writing competition, in which students select a prompt and explore the topic in a balanced manner, providing evidence along the way.
Science- Ms. Hanks
Exactly as you might think, the Science competition asks questions about a variety of topics from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Social Studies- Coach Acosta
This competition has a variety of aspects, including reading a book in advance, learning about a variety of important individuals and events, answering multiple choice questions, and writing an essay. This year's topic is the 1920's- from the Great War to the Great Depression.
Spelling and Vocabulary- Mr. Chad Nash
Students study a list of words in order to spell them correctly. Some words are also marked as necessary for vocabulary knowledge.
